  • El Vado hydroelectric facility (renewable hydropower, 9 megawatts)

What makes DPU unique is that it is a community-owned municipal utility providing the incorporated city/county with electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services. Additionally, the public school district is in the top 4% nationwide and the community enjoys a low crime rate.

Adding to the county’s allure is the scenic beauty of the mountains, canyons and mesa tops, the rich history of the ancestral pueblos, and the high-altitude recreational resources. Pajarito Mountain is just 5 miles from downtown Los Alamos, offering year-round outdoor opportunities in the form of hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, skiing and snowshoeing.
