Reduce Incarceration Through Meditation Instead

Meditation company Metaphysical Entities suggests ex-cons use the power of meditation to allow for a smoother, permanent transition back into society, and less recidivism.

CAPITAL HEIGHTS, MD / May 3, 2023 / Currently, the American prison system houses two million people in its jails and federal prisons across the country, and nearly 2,000 children are arrested each day in the United States. Now, the Texas Juvenile Justice Department is so inundated by youth prisoners it’s asked a judge to push kids into adult prisons.

Life as a juvenile prisoner is crippling; years of isolation force youth to lose vital social, emotional, access to education, and practical skills necessary to navigate a productive, well-adjusted life post-prison. Unsurprisingly, the recidivism rate in US is among the highest in the world. A staggering 44% of criminals released in the United States return to prison within their first twelve months, while nearly two-thirds of formerly incarcerated individuals are re-arrested within three years of their release.

That’s why meditation company Metaphysical Entities seeks to reduce recidivism rates through spirituality and mindful thinking. Metaphysical Entities CEO Gregg Smith has seen how tools like meditation can change the game for ex-cons. Smith, a former prisoner himself, knows firsthand just how difficult it is to adapt to the real world after long-term imprisonment.

“Improving mindset is a powerful tool,” Smith starts after reflecting on his nine-plus years in federal prison. “It can reduce some of the challenges ex-cons face during re-entry into society, and in turn, help them enjoy a more well-adjusted life over time.”

As mindfulness and meditation become larger talking points in the mental health community, the benefits of mindful meditation have become more widely accepted. Initial findings indicate that consistent meditation may increase brain gray matter density, which is the area of the brain responsible for memory, learning, cognition, and self-awareness.

Similarly, meditation can help people become far less likely to suffer from negative thoughts or fall prey to volatile emotional reactions during stressful situations. Some studies show meditation may also soothe post-traumatic stress disorder, and even as little as a 10 minute mindful meditation can help brains better perform and adjust to life outside of prison walls.

“Meditation is powerful,” Smith continues. “It’s a way to achieve personal success in a healthy, sustainable way.”

As ex-convicts pilot through the daily stressors of reintegration, a meditative mind can help reduce anxiety, making the transition much smoother and possibly lower recidivism rates. “People want a second chance at improving their lives,” Smith says. “Meditation may be the tool to make that happen.” For ex-convicts re-entering society, there’s all the reason in the world to try.
